To the Scene of the Crime

I didn't have any plans today but I knew I wanted to get out of the house because I spent all day Saturday just hanging out inside reading magazines and catching up on my TV. Jenny and I got together and went downtown to the Financial District to explore a little bit. I'd never been to Wall Street and she's never been to South Seaport, so we met up at Grand Central and made the trek downtown.

The New York Stock Exchange at Wall and Broad Streets downtown.

Wall Street was pretty dead today, obviously, but it was sort of nice. I could just imagine the energy surrounding that building, especially as of late, on a normal day. And it's sort of weird to think that the world economy was built and crashed right there. Jenny and I forgot to find the bull, though, so we'll have to take another trip down sometime and check it out.

After hanging out at the seaport ad the mall a little bit, we decided to head uptown and see Oliver Stone's W. Sort of an odd connection, now that I think about it: seeing a film about a failed American president just a few hours after visiting the site of a failed American economy. Life is tricky that way. The film was just all right, but Josh Brolin was an amazing and tragic Bush. I'll be a little surprised if he doesn't get an Oscar nomination.

Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Bridge from the South Seaport.

So this marks my 50th blog post, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. As of this past Thursday, I've lived in the city for five months, with six fast approaching on November 30. Hopefully by then we'll have an economy that's at least showing signs of recovering and a new Democratic president-elect waiting to book a lame duck out of office in January. Time will tell.
