A Few Words on Love from Neil Patrick Harris

I don't talk a lot about love or dating on this blog, mostly because I've always kept that stuff to myself and my friends. But I read last week's New York magazine cover story on Neil Patrick Harris (sort of my hero, for obvious reasons) on the subway this morning and the little bitty part where he talks about his boyfriend David Burtka really struck me. The few graphs basically talk about how NPH met David a few years ago when they were both on Broadway, and Neil instantly had something for him. David, however, was in a long-term relationship and was even in the process of adopting a set of twins with his then-boyfriend. Neil told a mutual friend Kate that he had a big crush-from-afar on David, and when things started going sour in David's relationship, Neil made his move. Here's how the story reads:

"I sort of gazed from afar until [the break up] had run its course. And thankfully I got to hear from Kate on the phone, every now and again, when she'd say, 'They're fighting! They're fighting! You might have your chance!'"

After Burtka and his partner broke up, he and Harris went on a date, "and it was all very quick and fast, and I'm still head over heels and we're five-plus years in."

"We yin and yang very well," says Harris. "We're both Geminis, but I, you can probably tell, process what the options are, and figure out what to say, and he tends to just say what he is feeling. I'm just bowled over by him. He's made my life exponentially more livable. He's just—great. I'm his forever protector, and I'm happiest when he's happy."

That is love, ladies and gentlemen, and it happened to NPH at 30ish, so it can happen to any of us, now or then or later. My friends and I worry about this stuff a lot, but in the end, who cares when it happens? As long as I'm "bowled over" and it makes "my life exponentially more livable," it's worth whatever wait it takes.
