On Nannies, Delivery and Cleaning Ladies

A little while ago I was waiting in line at Whole Foods (which took forever, as always), but this time I used the grocery line instead of the usual lunch line. Where I usually see a snaking line of suits, ties and skirts, today I saw another breed of New Yorker: the Tribeca nanny.

Seeing nannies in New York is inevitable, but the sheer number of them at Whole Foods was odd. And they all knew each other. They talked to each other as they stood in line, buying yogurt and oatmeal for their employers' pantries and pushing a 3-year-old brat of a different skin color around.

Needless to say, none of the nannies looked like Scarlet.

It all comes down to money, because while all the nannies were achatter, I was also paying attention to the delivery section. Delivery at Bed Bath and Beyond is $10-$15, so i would expect it to be about that for Whole Foods as well. But the volume being delivered was so large. I saw one woman bring an entire cart, spend about $350 on groceries, then get it delivered. And it's not like going to Ikea (as if they ever would) and buying a few big things once. Groceries are weekly, at least biweekly, and that delivery charge can add up. But I guess they don't mind spending the extra money. And I guess if I had it, I wouldn't mind spending it either.

This is sort of an ironic post seeing as how today is the day Samm and I hired a woman to clean our apartment. Hmm...
